Sabbatical at Avalon for Rose-Hulman professor will focus on applied Hadoop & NoSQL research

Plano, Texas – September 19, 2013 – Avalon Consulting, LLC, a leading implementer of Big Data, Web Presence, Content Publishing and Enterprise Search solutions, today announced an innovative partnership with Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s Computer Science and Software Engineering Department. Avalon will host professor Sriram Mohan for a one-year sabbatical. Professor Mohan, in the role of a consultant, will be responsible for researching and developing advanced Hadoop and NoSQL solutions for Avalon’s clients. Mohan will also leverage his teaching expertise to expand Avalon’s in-house advanced training program for the company’s staff. The consulting experience he gains through critical commercial projects while at Avalon will allow Mohan to incorporate leading-edge technology training in core database courses for future Rose-Hulman students who will improve their readiness for advanced placements in industry roles upon graduation.

“We are thrilled to expand our relationship with Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and honored to work with Sriram Mohan during his sabbatical,” said Casey Green, Executive Vice President of Business Development, Avalon Consulting, LLC. “We know Sriram will bring added success to our client projects. He will also play a key role in enhancing the already outstanding training we provide internally to our professional consultants. Innovative professional development opportunities like this help us not only in attracting and retaining top talent but also in furthering the leadership our consulting team demonstrates in applied technology expertise.”

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology attracts the brightest science, engineering and math students from around the world to its Terre Haute, Indiana campus. With 2,100 undergraduate and 100 graduate students, the institute places an emphasis on a hands-on education where students learn the value of teamwork as well as formulas and equations. In each of the past 15 years, Rose-Hulman has been ranked No. 1 by U.S. News & World Report among institutions whose highest degree in engineering is a master’s. In addition to featuring a 99 percent placement rate among its graduates, the school ranks in the Payscale top 10 for starting salaries.

“Typically, academia leads industry when it comes to new technology, but in the case of Big Data, industry has really taken the lead,” said Sriram Mohan, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. “I’m excited to be in a position where I will be collaborating with one of the most knowledgeable teams of industry experts in my effort to expand my working knowledge of NoSQL databases and Hadoop.”

There are several key outcomes of this partnership that are expected to benefit Avalon, Avalon’s clients, Rose-Hulman and Rose-Hulman’s CSSE students:

  • Further enhance the high-quality training on Hadoop and NoSQL already available internally to Avalon’s professional consulting staff

  • Build upon Avalon’s established reputation as an innovator in the field of enterprise technology implementation
  • Support recruitment and retention efforts for Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s CSSE Department by demonstrating the willingness of leading commercial entities to partner with faculty

“With computing applications pervasive in every aspect of our lives, it’s critical that students understand how the software engineering concepts they are learning apply to everyday, real-world applications,” said Cary Laxer, Ph.D., Professor and Head of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. “When students see the application of what they are learning, it gives them more meaning and motivation to learn. And, when our faculty members take sabbatical for professional development, it’s a win-win for our students.”

Sriram Mohan is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. His research interests include relational, XML and document oriented database systems, and human computer interaction. He has led the development of native XML database systems, introduced security models for XML databases, and trained software engineers in designing and developing relational and NoSQL systems. He is also associated with the Database Lab in the Department of Computer Science at Indiana University. Sriram has a Ph.D. and a Master’s in Computer Science from Indiana University.
